The average length of a management consulting engagement is approximately 4.2 months, but optimal consulting firms design projects so that follow-on projects are obvious and should aim for 40% of revenue from repeat clients. This isn't because problems are complex, but because solutions are engineered to be incomplete. - [4 Digital Literacy Skills That Separate Great Leaders from Lucky Ones](https://mindmedia.tech/2025/06/28/4-digital-literacy-skills-that-separate-great-leaders-from-lucky-ones/): I explore these concepts in much more detail, including my new "Digital Literacy Ecosystem" framework and research on the "Digital Resilience Index," in my podcast PsyberSpace. This topic has been on my mind lately, so I thought I'd write about it here. - [The Psychology of Online Communities](https://mindmedia.tech/2024/05/13/psyberspace-podcast-episode-4-the-psychology-of-online-communities/): This episode delves into the multifaceted world of online communities, discussing their impact on identity formation, social activism, generational differences, cultural nuances, echo chambers, and the challenges they pose to democratic discourse. Poston explores cognitive dissonance, introduced by Leon Festinger, as the discomfort arising from holding contradictory beliefs, and how this leads to defensive behaviors rather than introspection or change. The episode discusses the role of cognitive processes and social identity theory in contributing to these reactions, emphasizing the impact of factors like confirmation bias, societal and cultural expectations, and privilege. Through real-world examples and psychological research, the discussion highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics in both personal growth and society-wide coherence. The episode also suggests strategies such as meditation, emotional regulation skills, and community dialogues to mitigate defensive reactions and foster a more inclusive, empathetic society. - [Do You Have a Minute? The Interrupted Brain](https://mindmedia.tech/2024/05/06/do-you-have-a-minute-the-interrupted-brain/): The topic of the impact of interruption on the brain and on emotional valence is rich in research. Each facet of the research focuses on different types of interruption and the varying areas of the prefrontal cortex impacted by distraction and interruption. Research on auditory interruption (Lee et al., 2020) (Schlittmeier & Liebl, 2015) demonstrated an impact on auditory scene analysis (Baars & Gage, 2012) and lowered cognitive performance. Research on visual attention (Long & Kuhl, 2018) has shown that unplanned interruption and distraction creates a bottom-up stimulus that influences the attentional networks of the brain – the frontoparietal control network (FPCN), dorsal attention network (DAN), and ventral attention networks (VAN) specifically. Baars and Gage (2012, p. 313) call out distractions as an inhibitor to the ability to follow internally generated plans when talking about dorsolateral prefrontal syndromes. Johnson (2009) connected the dots between emotional attention set shifting and the ability to switch between tasks, which could support the idea that the negative emotion caused by unplanned interruptions makes it more difficult for subjects to self-direct which task they will focus on post interruption. Research by Sasangohar et al. (2017) on a cohort of ICU nurses studied the impact of multiple unplanned interruptions (which they termed nested interruption) on primary and secondary tasks and task resumption and the resulting increased cognitive load. Later research (Walter et al., 2020) expanded on this general idea, noting that unplanned nested interruptions had a negative impact not just on task completion and resumption, but on efficiency and safety as well, thanks to length bias and increased cognitive load. One study (Addas & Pinsonneault, 2018) focused on an area of interruption research similar to that of Sasangohar et al. – the impact of interruptions on multilevel groups (a ripple effect of interruption impact from individual to groups the individual interacts with). - [Thinking Fast and Slow](https://mindmedia.tech/2024/04/29/psyberspace-podcast-episode-2-thinking-fast-and-slow/): In this episode of PsyberSpace, we dig into Daniel Kahneman's groundbreaking concepts from Thinking, Fast and Slow, exploring how our minds' fast and slow thinking systems influence our behavior in the digital world and during crises. - [New Guidance for Workplace Well-Being from US Surgeon General](https://mindmedia.tech/2022/10/21/new-guidance-for-workplace-well-being-from-us-surgeon-general/): Unpacking the latest framework on workplace well-being from the US Surgeon General - [Conspiracy, Covid-19, Religion, and Groupthink](https://mindmedia.tech/2022/05/30/conspiracy-covid-19-religion-and-groupthink/): History repeats itself. Psychology, and especially early psychology, has historically viewed the working of the mind and the study of behavior and emotion through the lens of colonization, weaponized homogeneity, control, and whiteness - [Autistic Representation in Media Survey](https://mindmedia.tech/2022/04/22/autistic-representation-in-media-survey/): Autistic Representation in Media Survey - [Behind the Flag: Hate or Harmony?](https://mindmedia.tech/2021/08/22/behind-the-flag-hate-or-harmony/): Since 2016 I’ve been thinking about the changing meaning of the United States flag from a symbol of harmony or unity to symbol of hate. It seems I’m not the only one. Research has shown that exposure to the United States flag can lead to increased nationalism and group cohesiveness. Vexillology, or the study of flags, makes note of several flags being used as symbols of hate, but for this post I'm focused only on a brief semiotic analysis of the traditional representation of the United States flag as we know it today. - [Exploring the Role of Fear in a Shift to Authoritarian Political Party and Aggressive Political Behavior](https://mindmedia.tech/2021/01/06/exploring-the-role-of-fear-in-a-shift-to-authoritarian-political-party-and-aggressive-political-behavior/): I've been exploring an idea I have about the role of fear in a shift to authoritarian political beliefs and aggressive political behavior in grad school. As part of this, I've been reading many studies regarding the roles of conspiracy theories, online hate speech, and a fear of mortality in relation to shifts in political ideology. In this post my focus will be on three of these. First we have the experimental study by Alizadeh, Weber, Cioffi-Revilla, Fortunato, and Macy “Psychology and morality of political extremists: evidence from Twitter language analysis of alt-right and Antifa” (2019). In this study, the authors examined 10,000 Twitter users with differing political ideologies that could be classified as “extreme right” or “extreme left.” Another 10,000 Twitter users were chosen for their non-partisan posts to act as the control group. By the end of this study, the authors had determined that Moral Foundation Theory could explain the impact of extreme online speech on political views.  Three other studies stood out in my initial exploration One was “Conspiracy Theories: Evolved functions and psychological mechanisms” by authors van Prooijen and van Vugt (2018), the second was “You’re hired! Mortality salience increases Americans’ support for Donald Trump” by authors Cohen, Solomon, and Kaplin (2017), and the third was “Mortality salience, system justification, and candidate evaluations in the 2012 U.S. Presidential election” by authors Sterling, Jost, Shrout (2016). These three studies were able to shed some light on the nuances of political ideological changes that could be caused by fear-based narratives; however, the methodology study by Alizadeh et al was more granular (2019). My hypothesis is that the increased experience of internalized fear as an individual and/or increased exposure to fear through extreme rhetoric and fear-based messaging can push individuals to be farther right politically or to otherwise have increasingly authoritarian political leanings, and in some cases can cause politically charged acts of aggression. - [How to use Positive Psychology and Technology to Reach Your Flow State](https://mindmedia.tech/2020/08/24/how-to-use-positive-psychology-and-technology-to-reach-your-flow-state/): Athletes, musicians, and other top performing people talk about being in the state of “flow” as an ideal mental state. It’s likely that you have personally experienced some level of flow at some point, either in your personal life or in your work. There is even a subset within the study of positive psychology that promotes “being in flow” as an optimal experience and a signifier of a good life (Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi). - [The Narrative Persuasion of QAnon Conspiracy Theories](https://mindmedia.tech/2020/08/23/the-narrative-persuasion-of-qanon-conspiracy-theories/): QAnon’s narrative system seemingly defies what have become standard evaluation tools for narrative persuasion’s impact. It’s difficult for even the media literate to understand how to respond to and contain this new phenomenon of misinformation (and disinformation) that has taken the internet (and now the real world) by storm. What began as a series of cryptic-to-the-point-of-cliché posts on an internet message board called 4chan, originating through 8chan and now 8kun, (The Atlantic) has now found its way into mainstream thought – even elected officials are falling victim to the fantastical narratives being espoused by QAnon’s national cadre of “true patriots.” What can we understand about why QAnon has become so successful at co-opting the belief systems and thought processes of people who read their narrative in such a short period of time? Let’s explore some of the elements of QAnon’s narrative storytelling and how it has become so persuasive (and pervasive). - [Neuromarketing and Politics: Divided We Fall](https://mindmedia.tech/2020/08/23/neuromarketing-and-politics-divided-we-fall/): What does this have to do with neuroscience and neuromarketing? Our brains are programmed to respond to stimuli in the form of strong, emotional stories. Paul Zak explored this in his research on oxytocin’s impact on trust, and again in his paper “The physiology of moral sentiments” (Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization). In the last year the average internet citizen’s brain has been flooded with emotional stories and imagery designed to align with (or to sway) the average internet reader’s personal identity, personal belief system, and existing biases (both unconscious and conscious). This constant onslaught of carefully designed marketing in the form of memes, disinformation, trolls, fake accounts, deep fakes, fake news, and emotional storytelling has had a vast impact on the fabric of society by eroding our prosocial behaviors (Zak, 2011). - [Unconscious perception](https://mindmedia.tech/2020/06/17/unconscious-perception/): To quote Romzoy "Things we either don't consciously see, or forget that we have seen, may have a strong impact on our thoughts and behavior." That sounds creepy, but you can learn to spot it and understand how it biases your thoughts, helping you make better decisions. ## Pages - [Media 2](https://mindmedia.tech/media-2/): Media and Publications A collection of Leslie Poston and Mind Media Tech's media appearances, videos, publications, and papers - [Contact](https://mindmedia.tech/contact/): const form = $('.de_fb_gateway_paypal_form').first().length ? $('.de_fb_gateway_paypal_form').first() : $('form').first(); - [How Mind Media Tech Uses AI](https://mindmedia.tech/how-mind-media-tech-uses-ai/): We’ll update our page any time our use case changes. - [Media and Publications](https://mindmedia.tech/media-and-publications/): killFade(); - [Readiness Assessment](https://mindmedia.tech/readiness-assessment/): Assess Your Organization's Readiness for Evidence-Based Transformation.
